CROSS CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING leisure activities
Americans enjoy a variety of leisure activities including going to movies, participating in free events at local parks, engaging in arts and crafts, playing or listening to music, outdoor activities like camping and sports, attending various sports events, joining clubs and societies, and participating in church activities. Movies, parks, music, outdoor activities and sports are some of the most popular pastimes. Cities offer many opportunities for the arts, music, clubs, and other activities, while smaller towns have access to parks, movies, church activities, and outdoor pursuits.

Kaitlin Hessie is a caring, personable, and reliable young lady who took her studies seriously and did extremely well in high school. She was involved in many extracurricular activities like girl scouts, swimming, lacrosse, and softball. She also participated in her church youth group. Students in grades 10-15 participated in a gratitude jar activity with the goals of focusing on positive things in their lives, developing gratitude, increasing self-awareness, and comparing their views on gratitude to others. Students wrote notes about things they were grateful for related to school, sports, entertainment, and family and placed them in a gratitude jar. Over 300 students participated and the jar was later exhibited to showcase feelings of gratitude.

• Were inspired by models of successful School-Community partnerships currently supporting our local schools in Bergen County.
• Discovered potential partnership resources and met new contacts in our area.
• Generated ideas and learned how to further develop promising partnerships.

The Diocese of Allentown was the only Catholic School system in the Northeast to grow Elementary School Enrollment in the 2012-2013 Academic year. In the 2013-2014 school year our system grew again. Two systems - the food system and built environment - significantly impact obesity rates. An environmental intervention study in Somerville, MA achieved success by creating opportunities for physical activity throughout the day and increasing access to healthy foods through changes across multiple settings including homes, schools, after school programs, and the community. Similar comprehensive efforts are now underway in Springfield, MA through a collaborative coalition called Live Well Springfield.
